Time is measured differently, and in different units, on D'Tanile. One Colonial Standard Year (CSY) is made up of 10 months, each with 5 8-day weeks; that is, one month is 40 days long, and one year is 400 days long. (Hours, minutes, and seconds are measured the same as they are on Earth.) Both storylines in Story of a World begin in CSY 2653. Days of the Week There are eight days in D'Tanile's week, each day named for one of the primary elements. The logic behind them is passed down in fable form in most schools as follows: The sun's light warms the ice of winter, letting water flow free to nourish the earth. The earth's breath births the wind, which tears the sky with thunder, visiting fire's kiss upon the grass. Flames leave behind scorched darkness, waiting for the sun. The alternate names of the days (-di suffix) are a dialect variet used in Reisis and some parts of Aryena. Most people will recognize the alternate names, but, especially in Nin and Detienne, go with the -a suffix. Day one -- light -- Estera (alt: Esterdi) Day two -- ice -- Skreia (alt: Skreidi) Day three -- water -- Mara (alt: Maradi) Day four -- earth -- Ghea (alt: Ghedi) Day five -- wind -- Sypha (alt: Syphadi) Day six -- thunder -- Rega (alt: Regadi) Day seven -- fire -- Afura (alt: Furadi) Day eight -- dark -- Ourya (alt: Ourydi) Months of the Year D'Tanile's ten months are named by the constellations most prominent during their seasonal cycle. Thus the third month of the year would be referred to as the Leopard's month. Dates are frequently recited: "Syphadi, thirteenth day of the Leopard's month." In journal or letter format, dates are traditionally written: "Syphadi, Leopard's 13th" Numerically: "03.13.2653" Month one -- the Sovereign Month two -- the Goddess Month three -- the Leopard Month four -- the Hunter Month five -- the Great Tree Month six -- the Sickle Month seven -- the Farmer Month eight -- the Wheel Month nine -- the Trident Month ten -- the Dragon Here is how the months would look on a calendar; since every month is the same number of days, the days of the week always fall on the same date every month.
Note: The Dragons have their own calendar, separate from the one used by the Humans, Elves, and Demi-Humans, and the Dragons do not recognize the above units. |
